Salzburg - Waistline Alert
Disregard previous info about quiet spacious First Class rail carriages - todays carriage was full! Suitcases seriously crammed into every nook and cranny. Still - it was only a one and a half hour trip and we were seated comfortably nonetheless. The passing scenery kept us riveted to the picture windows. Mountains are reducing in height and the valleys wider. Lush farmlands. It all looks so fresh in early summer.

Seriously good pub food.
This is going to be a hard challenge: eating here without letting out our waistbands!
The hotel is a 15 minute walk from the old city quarter, which is where we head to walk off our lunch! Our first impressions are of a much busier, larger city than Innsbruck. The architecture is much grander too.

Over food we discuss our schedule for the next three days. I think they’re going to be busy.
As in Innsbruck we found the taxis clean, modern and reasonably priced. Our small family run hotel is a clean 3 star facility.
Our first thoughts turn to food - 2pm - its hot - we’re thirsty and hungry. Reception pointed us towards either the nearest coffee shop, or the nearest “typical Austrian eating place”. In other words - a pub!
And its just a 2 minute walk. Not a difficult decision to make!
Doesnt that look inviting!!?
Alan chose sliced roast pork with spiced bread and pickles, accompanied by a dark beer.
And mine: cheese dumplings over a mixed salad with a local white wine.

We pass through famous Mirabeligarthen. (Mirabela Gardens). Much photographed. So this is the first thing ticked off our list of things to do.
Okay - its hot, we’re tired, so we head back to the hotel for a siesta. Can’t stop taking photos though!
After our rest, we decide to return to the pub for dinner, rather than take the 15 minute walk back to town.
More traditional Austrian food in surrounds that remind us of “The Oaks” in Sydney.
It’s more German food than Alpine food. Not surprising, considering Salzburg is on the German border.
