Surprises
We’ve just come back from dinner, to this rather unassuming apartment block:

We’ve been scouring the area for somewhere decent to eat, always avoiding the numerous Italian restaurants - simply because we wanted local food. What we had forgotten was that Austria shares a border with Italy - of course theres going to be a strong Italian influence on their cuisine. The only restaurant open tonight - a Sunday night - anywhere close to decent looking, looked pretty ordinary. And it was Italian.
Fearing the worst, we went inside (too cold to sit outside) to a large, busy diner-type restaurant- Cosy lighting, waiters rushing around, loudly buzzing with the sound of happy eaters! And we had the most delicious food! Alan, pork steak, fresh beans, chunky fried potatoes. Me, al dente home made tagliatelle with crispy fresh vegetables, beef strips in a creamy sauce. So much food we were bursting at the seams.
Never judge a book by its cover!
Sitting there digesting the food, we reflected on what we’d seen today - theres something I forgot to mention in my previous post: we called into the Minoritenkirche church, where there is a giant mosaic copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper that was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Can you imagine?! 200 years ago! The man himself!! It’s difficult to wrap my mind around!
