A Day in Newcastle

We were chasing the Great Northern Arts Festival, but it was a bit of a downlet.  There were few, very scattered exhibitions, mostly aimed at children.  We found a good photographic exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contempory Art. (which is next door to the Sage) and this prize exhibit (which is worth missing!)

Weird.

This is the Baltic Centre with the Millenium Bridge in front.  The first time we’ve seen it open with a boat passing through.

The Sage, or as the locals like to call it The Slug!

Then we went to Newcastle Castle - there’s not much left of it now, but we couldn’t NOT go - my grandfather was a Gatekeeper there for a spell.  Don’t know how long.  Anyway, from our research it would appear he most likely was selling tickets to the newly renovated castle in the late 1800’s when it first became a Museum!

We had a little fun exploring nonetheless.

From this angle you can see the great similarity between the Newcastle Bridge and Sydney Harbour Bridge - both designed by the same engineering firm.  The Newcastle one came first, and is much smaller of course.

No - we didnt drink here, but John wanted to show us one of his old drinking holes - very quaint and atmospheric.  One of many along the waterfront area here in Newscatle.
