Rapperswil and a bit of wind!

Well here we are - the final full day of our travels.  Last night Zurich had a spectacular set of thunderstorms - lightening all around us for several hours - and the rain bucketed down.  The forecast for today was not terribly good - chance of more rain and much cooler.  But we took a punt - and went ahead with a planned cruise on the lake.

Well, not a cruise really - a ferry - one of many that ply the lake throughout the day.  Decided to make a day of it - 2 hours up to Rapperswil - have some lunch there, then back again.  And we didnt have a drop of rain after all!!!  However we had a bit of bother with wind on the way back - but more of that later.  Meanwhile, because of the poor weather outlook, we more or less had the ferry to ourselves: certainly in the first class section we treated ourselves to:

There’s some pretty swish places along the lakes edge:

And picturesque little towns:

But the gem had to be Rapperswil: the City of Roses its known as.  We loved the old town:

Didn’t see much in the way of roses until we came upon a walled garden at the Castle: stepped through the gate and was accosted by an overwhelming perfume or roses!  Every rose in this enclosed space was perfumed (well, we didnt smell them all of course)

Wish we had spent more time here - but then how any times have we said that this holiday!

This must be the last of the roses because the signs are here of approaching autumn.

As the ferry drew away from the town, the wind started to pick up - by the time we were halfway back it was whipping up a gale!  And at Erlenbach the boat got stuck - it simply couldn’t pull away from the dock!  The wind was so strong it was forcing the boat against the dockside.  After nearly an hour it was suggested that passengers abandon the boat and return to Zurich by train!

So thats what we did.  A disappointment finish to a fabulous day.  Hey ho!  At least we survived.  Ha Ha!  The first announcement over the loudspeakers concerning the problem advised us all “not to panic” !!!!!!!!  Up until that point we hadn’t even considered panicking!

Never mind.  It added a spice of excitement anyway.  And now back to hour little hotel - a nice dinner - then tomorrow we pack.

Our room is on the first floor over the restaurant, with a little balcony.  We could listen to the diners conversations until the restaurant closed its doors.  Pity we cant understand German!
