The Border Counties - Day 1

En route to our overnight stay near Melrose we headed for Hadrian’s Wall - couldn’t come to this region and not!  But first a stop off for coffee in the gorgeous little Roman village of Corbridge - worth a walk around.  Happened upon a pattisserie whose window display had our mouths watering - it was impossible to walk past with taking a photo.  We were there for several minutes salivating, - even Alan.  And by that time other people were taking pictures over our shoulders!

This building is a typical Scottish “keep”.  It has been turned into a very trendy bar: buy your drink downstairs and carry it to the top for the view. Not that we stopped: too many other things to do.

Now on to Chesters Fort - all thats left of the Roman cavalry fort.  This guy John Clayton owned a rather grand house nearby and discovered bits of old stone buried in his fields - kept on digging, and digging, and digging.  (This was in the late 1800s). Unearthed about 20 miles of Hadrian’s wall and this massive fort.  Wouldn’t it be just fascinating to reveal evidence of this era in Britain dating back to 120AD.

Then a long drive across Keilder National Forest - amazing scenery.

We arrived late at our accommodation only to find it was a 15 minute drive from any town!  We were in Lillesleaf in a converted pub: The Plough Inn, now “a restaurant with rooms”.  Trouble is, the restaurant (pretty upmarket) is only open for food Wednesday to Sunday: we arrive on Tuesday!  Anyway, we drove into Melrose - found ourselves a cosy little spot for refreshments!
